Nigeria’s first solar-powered phone network

Nigeria’s first solar-powered phone network called ‘WorldGSM’ is set to be introduced by an Indian firm, Shyam Group, to rural areas in Nigeria. It will be the first solar powered broadband network in the country designed to serve rural populations.
It was observed that in remote areas in Nigeria, there is either no electricity grid or it’s only available for a few hours each day. Diesel generators are used to fill the gap times, resulting in several billion litres of diesel fuel being burned every single year and that diesel prices are just one part of the story.
So, they came up with a solution. A WorldGSM™ network draws no power from the electricity grid. The Base Stations are erected in days by non-engineers and powered by the sun.  The solar-powered cell phone towers will use Boston Power batteries to power the tower, which could set its use up to 3 days without sun.
WorldGSM towers is provided for the needs of many people in rural areas that are far beyond the reach of mobile phone networks.
