The Lagos State Government on Sunday said the reconstruction of the
Ago Palace Way, Okota, was delayed by litigations and other factors
which had been addressed. According to a statement by the Assistant Director, Press and Public
Relations, Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Biola Fagunwa, the area
is a strategic bypass that links the Expressway to Amuwo Odofin and
Festac Town. It also opened up an alternative route from Festac/Amuwo to Ikotun, Ejigbo, Egbeda and Oshodi.
The state government said it
was aware of concerns about the slow pace of road construction in the
area and its impact such as cost of transportation, gridlock,
non-availability of alternative routes and fear of flooding.
It assured residents that effort were being made to finish the road on time. The statement read, “As an existing road in a developed area, there
is bound to be removal of some structures. However, government has paid
adequate compensation to those with legally tenable claims. “The agreed construction work plan submitted by the construction company handling the work
indicates that the drainage channels are to be done prior to proper
road construction. This has been done except in the area where
litigations have stalled completion.” The government urged people in the area to see their inconveniences as prices being paid for modernisation of the area. “Wherever there is an ongoing construction, the ministry provides
alternative routes. This has been done on this project as in all other
road projects,” the statement said.
It added that the commissioner for the ministry, Obafemi Hamzat, had visited the area and other palliatives measures were being worked out
