Gunmen attack Yobe prisons, free 41 inmates

Unknown gunmen on Sunday attacked Damaturu Prisons in Yobe State, killing a prison official and setting free 41 inmates. Two other prisons officials were critically wounded and were on danger list at an undisclosed hospital. The Nigeria Prisons Public Relations Officer, Kayode Odeyemi, confirmed to our correspondent in Abuja on Sunday that an official was killed during the jail-break.

He explained that the NPS had reached out to other security agencies for assistance and were on the trail of the fleeing inmates. A five-member ad-hoc committee set up by the Federal Government on February 23, 2012, had recommended that prisons across the country should be fortified as they were not secured enough to prevent armed attacks and jail-breaks.
